Traditional wooden Welsh lovespoon hand made in Wales

The Welsh Love Spoon is a traditional craft that dates back to the seventeenth century. A young man would carve an intricately designed Spoon bearing symbols to display his feelings of love to a chosen partner.

Today Love Spoons are given as gestures of love or friendship to celebrate engagement, weddings, anniversary, birthdays, christening, retirement, birth, commitment ceremony or any other special events.

Below are listed some of the Welsh Love Spoon designs and their meanings:

  • Bell - Weddings or Anniversaries
  • Balls in a cage - Love held safe or number of children
  • Birds - Love birds. Stork represents a new birth
  • Celtic Knot - Eternal love
  • Chain - A wish to remain forever together or number of children
  • Cross - faith/ blessing
  • Diamond - Wealth or Good fortune
  • Heart - Love and affection
  • Horseshoe - Good luck
  • Key or Keyhole - Security or I shall look after you
  • Twisted Stem - Togetherness
  • Dragon - Symbol of Wales

Paul Curtis, a native of South Wales, grew up in a family of four children. He discovered his love and talent for wood caring when he was very young.
When Paul Curtis was sixteen, after learning of his interest in wood carving and design, a good friend Ceris Williams, took him to visit a highly acclaimed master craftsman called Gwyndaf Breeze at St. Fagans Welsh Folk Museum in Cardiff.
Gwyndaf tought Paul how to make a Welsh Lovespoon and told him about the history of the lovespoon. When he was leaving the museum, Gwyndaf encouraged Paul to make a spoon by kindly giving him some pieces of various hardwoods. With a piece of the hardwood Paul made his first lovespoon and gave it to Ceris, that was in 1983.
Paul made many lovespoons after this in 1985 his designs became so popular he decided to start a small business making them. He was sponsored by the Prince of Wales Trust, and has been making them for a living ever since.
Today Paul's wooden lovespons are much sought after all over the world and many exported to Japan, USA and Germany.
